Watersports / Shoreham Beach Update from Adur Council

We have received a letter from Adur Council re. the 2021 Safe Swimming zones and permitted activities within those areas plus the restrictions in force inside of the Yellow Marker buoys which means Fuel powered craft must be non planning or below 8kts on the beach side of the marker buoys (wind driven must proceed with care) . These markers run all the way from Southwick to the Ferring boundary.  Swimmers need to be aware of where the safe swim zones end.. they only go out as far as the outer swim zone markers and not to the larger outer yellow markers (the 8kt boundary markers). We must all be aware of each other and be courteous when out on the water. Please read and follow the rules and... Have a great summer!

Dear James and Danny,
As we fast approach our summer season for 2021 and what is expected to be another very busy period on our coast. I wanted to take the time to highlight some water safety controls we will implement from 1st May. It would be beneficial if the following information was made available and circulated to your customers.
As you may be aware there are four designated swim zones along our coastline from 1st May to 30th September. These areas are marked out by yellow special marker buoys in a square/rectangular shape and form an exclusion zone for any other sporting pursuit to enter.
This includes all vessels, including jet skis (PWC) and all fishing is prohibited.
The only exceptions to the above is for domestic paddlesport equipment, which is not groups, snorkelling, inflatables and children’s light play or junior bodyboarding.

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing is permitted anywhere outside the swim zones. We ask that you do not use any of the swim buoys for maneuvers as this is the boundary fo swimmers and should be avoided to minimise risk.

Lancing Beach has a designated zone specifically for kitesports and is split in sections for beginners and more advanced. More information on this can be found By Clicking Here

Jet skis (PWC) are becoming increasingly popular and with that in mind please ensure buoyancy aids are always worn. These again are prohibited from the swim zone areas. Additionally, we position 8 knot special marker buoys running horizontally from Southwick Basin to our Ferring boundary. Although PWC and vessels are permitted within this area, they must adhere to staying under 8 knots at all times whilst within the area from shoreline to the buoys.

There is a public launch ramp located in Alinora car park (Worthing), although there is no use of vehicles to aid launch and recovery. Alternatively there are specific launch areas in Shoreham which you can find HERE
(Note. Very few allow access or exit from the water at Low Tide).

Worthing Coastal Office is an additional service to the Coastguard. We undertake foreshore mechanised patrols daily East and West and during the summer season, when possible, we will also carry out water based patrols.

We are forecasting another busy summer season for the south coast and hope the above information can be relayed to your customers to ensure safety for all is imperative.
Please feel free to contact us for more information or clarification on any of the above.
Further information can also be found on our website.
Our operating hours are:
Monday to Sunday 9am - 6pm (1st May - 30th September)

Kind regards,
Robert Dove
